Discovering Long Island, New York
A Global Studies Experience
My eight month internship in
Long Island, New York has come to a bittersweet end. What an amazing personal
and professional experience it was! Along the way I experienced so much New
York City and Long Island had to offer, many of which had deep historical roots.
For this Global Studies project, I sought to learn the background, experience
relevant activities, events, and locations, and reflect upon my experiences
while comparing them to stereotypes and portrayals. My goal was to portray to
my friends, family, classmates, and coworkers the influences that have shaped
Long Island culture and society today, and to resolve misconceptions about the
area.
I wanted to complete this project after my initial three months in Long Island last summer, when I briefly began to see beyond the surface of the area and understand the great influences and impacts of the area. Many of the activities and places I reported (please visit my blog!) for this experience I likely would have visited anyway; however, having a base knowledge of the historical influences prior to each experience truly gave each adventure a unique and more meaningful impact. Moving forward, I understand and appreciate the importance of digging a little deeper to see what can be uncovered about a place, an event, or a topic. Not knowing where I will end up in the coming years after graduating, I plan to continue investigating and researching to find unique and characteristic experiences to each new area.
